CAFAA’s Awesome!

CAFAA’s Awesome!

Following in the footsteps of Lou’s wise reflections after our CAFAA conference, I’d also like to share a thought or two that I’ve been processing since my time in Crested Butte.

Here we go: isn’t CAFAA awesome? I’ve been involved for a relatively short time compared to some of the old-timers around here (who shall go un-named, but whom everyone knows all too well… JAMES). Already, though, I have felt welcomed and encouraged. The group is both fun-loving and serious about the work they do – something I’ve found to be true very often about people in financial aid. At what other professional association do you have presidents marrying other presidents, hilarious improv artists helping plan your conferences and people trying to make the word “dump” be cool? It’s a great crew that I’m proud to be a part of.

One more quick takeaway from the conference that ties in to a reason I’m glad I’m a CAFAA member. William Butler Yeats once said, “education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” The opportunity to learn is life-changing. How incredible is it that we get to be a part of a gathering of people passionate about making education accessible from beginning to end? It was so fun to see our K12 counselors, our financial aid administrators and our government and business partners all come together with that same purpose in mind.

Times like the CAFAA conference are, for me, a chance to step out of the rhythms of normal life and be reminded of things like these. Thank you Thomas and the conference committee for making the conference a success and thank all of you members for what you do! I’m grateful for the opportunity to work and serve alongside you and look forward to an awesome year celebrating CAFAA’s 50th anniversary!
