Job Description
The Financial Aid Counselor -Verification Processor and Internal Audit serves students and families in the processing steps of the financial aid application process. Salary is $50,000. Benefits available include health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance, as well as a selection of several defined contribution retirement plans. Dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed at 0.5 FTE or above are eligible for undergraduate dependent tuition grants of up to 50%. These tuition grants will cover in-state tuition charges. Further requirements may exist. Other benefits may be available based on position. Their role is to validate eligibility for various aid programs and review documents and reports to ensure accuracy and resolve errors, conflicting information and any processing concerns. A qualified counselor must be knowledgeable of federal, state, and institutional rules, regulations, and procedures related to student aid programs to effectively process applications and meet department compliance goals. The counselor must also possess a workable knowledge of the current US Tax rules, forms and benefits. The incumbent is responsible for correctly reviewing, analyzing, and verifying student application data and change of circumstances appeals based on established policy and procedures to determine aid eligibility. Additionally, the position advises and counsels students, prospective students, and parents concerning available aid and scholarships, the application process, and responsible utilization of financial aid funds, ensuring the information is accurate, and relevant and providing collaboration and support to all OFA staff. The practice of empathy, community building, civility, recognition, and exceptional customer service are key components of this position. 60% Program Administration Conducts timely verification reviews for selected students according to federal regulations for both FAFSA and CASFA applicants. Reviews various documents and reports to ensure accuracy for aid processing. Ensures compliance with all financial aid policies, procedures, and regulations when reviewing financial aid applications. Exercises judgment when interpreting federal and state regulations for specific student situations. Notifies students of review outcomes, and uses clear and understandable communication with students, parents, and potential students to productively facilitate the verification process. Coordinate and process change of circumstances appeals to support students experiencing personal or economic crises. Will resolve disbursement errors, Pell reconciliation and assist with private student loan processing issue resolution. 25% Client Services Counsels students and parents timely with regard to financial aid and the UNC scholarship process, providing accurate information and timely processing of files. Explain policy and procedure to internal and external constituents. Disseminate accurate, courteous, and timely information. 10% Policy Development Assist the OFA Specialists and Directors in the development and implementation of financial aid policy by providing input and feedback to assist in meeting the goals of the office. Review federal regulatory changes to determine the need for and recommend new departmental policies to remain in compliance. 5% Community Development Represent the Office of Financial Aid and UNC in various activities, both internal and external to the University. These include, but are not limited to, Preview Days, Freshmen and Transfer Student Orientation, high school financial aid presentations, financial aid nights sponsored by UNC and A thorough knowledge of the student aid process is required as well as the ability to review step by step what has happened to the student’s electronic application. This position requires problem-solving on a daily basis. The complexity of this position requires that issues not only get resolved but that they are resolved with a high level of service, and satisfaction is expected immediately. Additionally, a person in this position does not have a standard answer for each customer. Each case must be handled individually because each case is unique and personal. assignments as requested.
